Luminary No.2 2024 Edition The Rare
Created in collaboration with Melodie Leung, Director of Zaha Hadid Architects
An exceptional 49 years old single malt.
The Rare was born of a collaboration between Melodie Leung, of internationally acclaimed design studio, Zaha Hadid Architects, and our Master Whisky Maker Gregg Glass. This unique partnership of form and flavour created three decanters of 49 Year Old Single Malt, with two surrounded by a breath-taking glass sculpture.
Matured in American white oak ex-Bourbon casks, The Rare was finished with an unparalleled combination of rare casks – Port Colheita 1963, 30 year old Apostoles sherry, and select Bourbon – then completed in a 1951 virgin oak hybrid cask, which was air-dried and hand-toasted by Gregg Glass himself.
Sculpted to perfection
The Luminary Rare 2024 was auctioned at Sotheby’s in May 2024 with all proceeds from the sale donated to V&A Dundee, where a design proof of the piece is now on display. Whisky connoisseurs will also be able to view a decanter and its accompanying sculpture at The Dalmore Distillery.
The Rare sculpture showcases multiple layers of copper-coloured glass – a continuous cascade evoking the layers of aging and flavour within the whisky. The appearance of a never ending loop, with no start or end point, is an evocative expression of The Dalmore’s unique approach to distillation and maturation, perfectly complementing the whisky within.

Sugared almonds and roasted Colombian coffee which lifts to a subtle sweet wood smoke
